Boxes that move cards forward when you know them.
The Leitner system sorts flashcards into boxes. Cards you answer correctly move to a box that is reviewed less often; mistakes send a card back.

Use it in a full sessionHow it works
Sebastian Leitner’s system uses a series of boxes. New cards start in box 1, which you review often. Each correct answer moves a card one box forward, to be reviewed less frequently. A wrong answer moves it back.
FocusKept applies the same idea automatically: each review step (day 5, 10 and 30, then 60 days and longer) is a box. Pass a review and the card moves forward; miss a question and it comes back in 2 days.
Step by step
- Create cards with a question on one side and the answer on the other.
- Review the cards in the first box most often.
- Move a card forward one box when you answer correctly.
- Move it back when you get it wrong.
- In FocusKept, simply do your due reviews: the boxes are handled for you.
Best for
- Vocabulary, definitions and formulas
- Long-term memory with minimal planning

When not to use it
- Understanding complex ideas; explain them first with the Feynman Technique
Questions
How does Leitner map onto FocusKept?
Each review step is a box: day 5, day 10, day 30, then 60 days, doubling up to 180. Your card’s current step is its box.
What happens when I get a card wrong?
It comes back for a relearning review in 2 days at the same step. Pass that review and it continues forward.
Do I need to move cards myself?
No. FocusKept schedules every card for you, so you only answer the reviews that are due today.
