How it works

Many people find their concentration rises and falls in cycles of roughly an hour and a half. A 90-minute block uses one full cycle for hard, meaningful work, then a 20-minute break lets you recover before the next one.

Treat the block like an important meeting with yourself: decide the task beforehand, close everything else and protect the time. One or two of these blocks a day can move your biggest projects forward.

Step by step

  1. Decide in advance which task deserves your deepest focus.
  2. Close email and chat, silence your phone and start the 90-minute timer.
  3. Work only on that task until the timer ends.
  4. Take a full 20-minute break before anything else demanding.

Best for

  • Writing, research, design and complex programming
  • Your most important task of the day
  • Mornings or other high-energy hours

When not to use it

  • When you are tired or easily interrupted; start with shorter blocks
  • Shallow tasks like email or admin

Questions

Can I really focus for 90 minutes?

It takes practice. Start with 50–60 minute blocks and lengthen them as the habit grows. The rating after each session shows how well it went.

How many deep work blocks should I do per day?

Two to three is plenty for most people. Use the rest of the day for lighter work.

What counts as deep work?

Work that needs your full attention and creates real value, such as writing, problem-solving or learning something difficult.
